CEO Mark Suzman disclosed the external review in a Tuesday memo to staff, stating the foundation will examine its engagement with Epstein and evaluate how philanthropic partnerships are vetted. The announcement comes after January’s Justice Department document release showed emails between Epstein and foundation employees, plus photographs of Gates with Epstein and unidentified women with redacted faces. Recently released Epstein files contain disturbing claims about Gates’ behavior. A 2013 email written in the voice of Gates advisor Boris Nikolic alleged the Microsoft founder sought drugs to address consequences of encounters with Russian women. The correspondence suggested Gates requested antibiotics to secretly drug his then-wife Melinda to treat an infection. The email portrayed Nikolic threatening resignation after Gates allegedly asked him to participate in covering up these activities to protect his reputation.

Gates has maintained his relationship with Epstein focused solely on philanthropy and acknowledges their meetings were a mistake. He denies contact with any of Epstein’s abuse victims. During a February town hall meeting, a spokesperson told Reuters that Gates took responsibility for his actions regarding the Epstein connection. Suzman noted the foundation expects to provide an update on the external review during summer months.
